Walk to Work Day 2008 Print E-mail

eventsWith 120 miles walked and 206 kilograms of carbon saved, Walk to Work Day 2008 was definitely a step in the right direction.

See the photos here (opens external window).

Nearly 600 people pledged to swap their Oyster card or car keys for a pair or comfy shoes, and walked an average of 4.1 miles in to work.

Walking Works was out and about raising spirits along the way. We had fitness instructors in 80s outfits encouraging walkers on London Bridge, and some walkers were treated to a drink – from our peddle-powered smoothie maker!

A marathon effort: Sutton Borough Citizens Advice Bureaux

Armed with Walking Works pedometers, staff from Sutton Borough Citizens Advice Bureaux took to the streets early on Walk to Work Day, with one extra keen staff member starting at 6am! When they strode in to their office, they were treated to a surprise breakfast at their desks.

Together they walked just over the distance of a marathon, burned 2,723 calories and avoided the 3.76kg of CO2 they'd have used if they'd taken the bus.

I was amazed to find that it was a pleasant jog in from Bromley on a sunny day and wondered if it might be possible to continue through the summer, perhaps once a fortnight.

Walking 9 to 5: Sustainable Development Commission

The Commission helped make the first ever Walk to Work Day a raging success in 2007 – by dressing up as Dolly Parton, donning ‘Walking 9 to 5' t-shirts and parading around London to make sure everyone knew what was happening. And the Commission was out in force again a year later. Their Walk to Work Day 2008 avoided 4.8kg of C0² and they burnt 2,771 calories.
