Make walking work for you...
26 Dec 09-Don’t waste £££ - walk off that winter weight gain!

After a season brimming over with a bit too much Christmas cheer, many of us will be horrified to realise that our clothes are suddenly more ‘snug' than is comfortable. But never fear: Walking Works, a campaign funded nationwide by the Big Lottery Fund, is here to help.

You all know that feeling; after a lovely Christmas holiday feasting on everything in sight, January arrives, bringing with it the dreaded ‘d' word - ‘detox'. In an effort to undo the festive excess, millions of us will be thinking about joining the gym to lose weight, tone up and get fit after the indulgent festive period. January is the busiest time of the year for new gym memberships, but despite this, between 40-50% of those new members will give up going within a year, leaving their pockets rather than their physique a few pounds lighter.

This January, Walking Works, a campaign run by national charity Living Streets, is calling for people to laugh in the face of expensive gym membership and instead reclaim the streets as their gym! Walking Works, which is aimed at encouraging employees to walk more as part of their daily commute and to help employers to promote walking in the workplace, highlights the role that walking can have in burning off all those Christmas tree-ats, without costing a penny.

Walking all or part of the commute to work is fun, green and healthy and with over 27 million adults in England not getting enough exercise, walking just a mere 30 minutes a day during the working week means meeting the governments recommended level of daily activity to transform your health.

Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets said:

"The average cost of gym membership now tops £40 a month, which when you add up over a year is more than enough for a sunny holiday for two! This January, we are going to be encouraging people to say no to the treadmill and hello to the great wide world outside. Walking is the easiest and cheapest way to fit activity into your day to get back into shape following Christmas. We are urging commuters to pledge to walk some or all of the way and from work to see what a difference it makes to their everyday lives. We'll think you'll be amazed at how such a simple step can transform your day whilst keeping your money in your pocket."
