Living Streets' Walking Works Conference: Wednesday 28th January 2009 National charity Living Streets will be exploring the benefits of having an active and healthy workforce at the ‘Why walking works for businesses' conference on 28th January. In trying to encourage sustainable travel to work, it can seem natural to place walking and cycling together as part of a workplace travel plan. But while measures to encourage cycling are now well understood, increasing walking levels in the workplace can seem a harder brief to fulfil. Designed to give people inspiration, ideas, tools or techniques to encourage walking as part of a workplace travel plan, the conference will explore low cost changes which can be implemented quickly. Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets said: "Encouraging people in the workplace to consider walking can be done a number of ways. You can take simple steps, such as pledging to walk more, going for lunchtime walks or even experimenting with ‘walking meetings'. All these can lead to a more active, healthy workforce. "In 2007 the average worker took 6.7 days off sick, losing 172 million working days and costing the economy £13.2bn . Improving the health of those working in your organisation is a worthwhile way to reduce this burden."
