Walk to Work Week 2009 Summary Print

four_poster_squareNational Walk to Work Week 2009 took place from 27 April - 1 May 2009. The Week was set up to encourage employees to consider walking more during their working day. Employees were asked to make a pledge to take part, then do one or more of the following challenges:

  • Walk all or part of the way to work
  • Walk all or part of the way from work
  • Go on a walking meeting
  • Go for a lunch time walk
  • Walk with a friend

To help employees and employers track their progress on the 5 challenges, Living Streets developed a free microsite specifically for Walk to Work Week 2009. The microsite allowed individuals to input the minutes walked over the week in each challenge. Individuals could also associate with their workplace. Key features included:

  • Results shown in terms of calories burned, carbon saved and distance walked by each employee, each workplace and the nation as a whole
  • Search function to find participating workplaces in each local authority area.
  • Top three performing workplaces and local authority areas displayed
  • Special graphics such as cupcakes, carbon footprint reductions and mapped journeys eg. ‘number of times around the world'
  • Employee leader board for each workplace
  • Final workplace report available for download by each employer

A variety of materials such as posters, leaflets, shoe bags, pedometers were also available for purchase by workplaces to assist in promotion. Living Streets also provided a number of free resources on our website including email templates, campaign images, guidance on each challenge and much more.

Over 5,000 employees and 550 workplaces took part in four_poster_squareNational Walk to Work Week 2009.  See some of the highlights from the Week or download a brief evaluation report here:  walk_to_work_week_evaluation.pdf 225.99 Kb
