top_tipsPromoting walking in winter - our top tips

This is the latest in a series of top tips which are created to ensure that your employees are not only walking to and from work, but walking more within the workplace.

This month we focus on ways to promote walking in the cold, winter months. We've also got some tips for your employees which you might also want to share.

Promote these amongst staff and you'll be one step closer to showing your commitment to a walking-friendly workplace, and a healthy, happy workforce!

  • Highlight security issues. Hold a security briefing for staff highlighting safer routes home and ways to keep safe. You could run a self defence class or give away personal alarms.
  • Flexible working hours. Employees will appreciate being able to shift their working hours to improve their commute, especially during the winter months when it's getting dark earlier.
  • Provide lockers. Have proper storage for winter clothing, such as bulky coats, brollies or trainers and a place to store office shoes and a change of clothes.
  • Be supportive. Sometimes all employees need is a little encouragement and information. Demonstrate your commitment to walking by sending all staff emails, post our tips on your intranet or hang our winter posters around the office. See our free resource on our website.
  • Incentivise. Hold a winter competition for staff who walk. You could offer a hot breakfast, vouchers for outdoor clothing shops or stick to a festive theme with mince pies!
  • Walking maps to stations further afield. If walking all the way is understandably not possible for all employees, then try having maps to local public transport stations, including those slightly further away, but still within a walkable distance.
  • Lighting outside the office. Employees should feel safe when walking on company grounds and on local routes. If they don't, try installing additional lighting or asking your local council to address the issues.
